If you enjoy board games or think you might enjoy board games, you should come out to a Greenfield Game Afternoon!

Try out different and varied games, bring a favorite board game to share, or just come and socialize with your neighbors.

Greenfield Portal Project: Update and Seeking Funding

On July 15, 2010, Connect Greenfield and the Greenfield Organization convened the second community meeting at Hough’s Sports Bar to discuss the results of an on-line survey and next steps regarding the design of a new Greenfield neighborhood sign at intersection of Beechwood and Alger. One hundred and forty seven Greenfielders voted on line for one of five alternative sign designs. Over 25 people attended the community meeting to further discuss the designs and provided additional feedback and ideas.

The preferred sign design is intended to reflect the nature and history of the neighborhood. The sign as proposed would be an iconic representation of Greenfield’s hills. The rounded hill shapes would consist of painted cut-out metal plates or tempered glass or both. The gaps between the plates would be illuminated by LED light strips giving some a “halo” effect and others a glow. There would also be lights in front illuminating the face of the sign. The word “Greenfield” would be made of painted cut-out metal letters or patina copper mounted to the curved base below. The base would be brick reflective of the surrounding buildings and Greenfield’s brick making heritage. The base would be capped with sand stone carrying the material of the nearby Greenfield Bridge.

Overall the meeting was very productive, providing clear direction on the design of the sign and layout of the island. Next up is fund raising. Having engaged the community in a design process and having developed a comprehensive list of design principles and a conceptual design for the site, the project is ready to advance into engineering and construction. Funding will pursue three approaches: (1) soliciting pro bono design services and construction/material contributions, (2) soliciting small contributions from Greenfield residents and businesses, and (3) soliciting larger contributions from foundations, more prominent Greenfield interests, and government sources.

Greenfield Garden Club “Homegrown” Potluck

We’re on for the next community meeting to discuss proposed sign designs, the online voting results, and next steps in advancing the redesign of the neighborhood portal at Beechwood and Alger. Community Meeting #2 will be held at Hough’s Sports Bar, this Thursday, 6:30 pm, July 15, 2010. As noted earlier on the site, the voting results are only one of multiple factors that will determine final sign design. To be further discussed the 15th. Well, join your neighbors for an experimental coffeehouse edition of Meet Your Neighbors Night in the community room at Greenfield Presbyterian Church (3929 Coleman Street). The latest tally is 124 votes with two clear favorites, but as noted in our earlier blog post, the voting results are only one of multiple factors that will determine final sign design, to be further discussed on the 15th. Hope to see you there.
